FAQ
Questions before you connect mail
Short answers about scanning, privacy, iCloud, Pro, and canceling. The legal versions are the Privacy Policy and Terms.
What is Unwanted Subscription?
Unwanted Subscription is an iPhone and iPad app that finds recurring charges in Gmail, Outlook, a connected bank, or a bank statement, shows what they cost, and walks you through canceling the ones you do not use.
How does Unwanted Subscription find subscriptions?
You connect Gmail or Outlook with read-only access, connect a bank through Plaid, or upload a PDF statement. Mail looks for receipts. Bank look-up reads recent transactions and Plaid’s recurring streams, then keeps merchants that repeat or match a known brand such as Netflix, Spotify, Adobe, and hundreds of others. Matching hits from mail, bank, and files are merged so you do not get two rows for the same plan.
Does Unwanted Subscription store my emails?
No. Receipts are read to detect subscriptions, then discarded. We do not keep message bodies, attachments, or a copy of your inbox. Your subscription list stays on the device.
Can it scan iCloud Mail?
No. Apple does not let third-party apps OAuth into iCloud Mail. Use Gmail, Outlook, connect a bank, or upload a bank or card statement instead.
Is Unwanted Subscription free?
The scan is free. Pro unlocks the full list of names, cancel guides, and renewal reminders. Pro Monthly and Pro Yearly are auto-renewable App Store subscriptions. Prices, length, and auto-renew details are shown before you buy. Terms of Use: https://unwanted-subscription.com/terms. Privacy Policy: https://unwanted-subscription.com/privacy.
Does Unwanted Subscription cancel subscriptions for me?
No. The app shows the merchant’s cancel steps and can open the billing page. You confirm the cancellation with Netflix, Spotify, Apple, or whoever bills you. That is safer and matches how those services actually work.
Is it safe to connect Gmail or Outlook?
You sign in with Google or Microsoft OAuth. Access is read-only: we cannot send, delete, or change mail. You can disconnect an inbox in the app at any time, which deletes the tokens on our servers.
What Google user data does Unwanted Subscription access?
If you connect Gmail, we access your Google Account email address and read-only Gmail receipts so we can list subscriptions on your iPhone. We do not store message bodies. We do not share Google user data with advertisers or AI providers. The use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Full details are in the Privacy Policy under Google user data.
Is it safe to connect a bank?
You sign in through Plaid Link, not in Unwanted Subscription. We never see your bank username or password. Access is read-only transactions so we can find repeating charges. We cannot move money. We do not keep the transaction lines after a scan. After a scan that finds subscriptions, we revoke Plaid access and delete the bank connection. You can also disconnect the bank in the app. Plaid’s End User Privacy Policy also applies. Full details are in the Privacy Policy under Bank connect.
How does bank scan find subscriptions?
Plaid returns up to about 24 months of posted transactions plus recurring outflow streams it has already identified. Some banks return less. We skip income, transfers, loans, and bank fees. Active streams become list items. Remaining outflows are grouped by merchant: if the same name hits at a similar amount more than once, or matches a known brand, it is kept. The list comes back to the iPhone. Transaction lines are not stored. If that scan found subscriptions, we revoke the bank connection so it does not stay in Sources.
What files can I upload?
PDF bank or card statements are sent to the server, read for recurring charges, and not kept after the scan. CSV files are parsed on the iPhone and are never uploaded.
Where does my subscription list live?
On that iPhone or iPad. Totals, reminders, and keep-or-cancel choices are not uploaded as a backup. Deleting the app removes the local list.
Which brands can it detect?
Streaming, music, software, gyms, news, VPNs, and more: Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Adobe, ChatGPT, Apple, Amazon Prime, and hundreds of others. Unknown repeating charges still show up so you can decide what they are.
Do I have to connect Gmail or Outlook?
No. Inbox connect is optional. You can connect a bank through Plaid, upload a bank or card PDF, or a CSV that stays on the iPhone. That is also the path if you only use iCloud Mail.
How do I find subscriptions billed through Apple?
On iPhone open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. APPLE.COM/BILL on a statement is that list, not always Apple Music. Deleting an app does not cancel it.
Can Unwanted Subscription find free trials?
Yes. Trial receipts and $0 or $1 authorizations show up in a scan the same way paid plans do. Cancel before the date in the email or in Apple Subscriptions so the trial does not convert.
Who cancels a family or Duo plan?
The manager, organizer, or billing owner. Leaving the family does not stop Spotify Duo, YouTube family, Apple One, or Canva Teams.
Does it work if I am not in the United States?
Yes. The app is an iPhone product. Merchant prices and cancel pages vary by country. Treat the list and guides as a starting point and confirm on the local billing page.
Stop paying for what you don’t use.
Free on the App Store. Ready when you are.
